The COULTOUR Island Edit
Hawaiʻi, Through the Seasons
A Different Rhythm. A Deeper Way to Experience the Islands.
Hawaiʻi enjoys beautiful weather year-round — but the islands have a rhythm that most visitors never notice. A seasonal pulse shaped by ancient Hawaiian traditions, natural cycles, cultural celebrations, and the quiet turning of the year. The COULTOUR Island Edit is a monthly journal exploring what makes each season in Hawaiʻi worth experiencing on its own terms.
Why Seasons Matter in Hawaiʻi
Kau and Hoʻoilo
Traditional Hawaiian culture recognized two seasons: Kau, the dry season running roughly from May through October, and Hoʻoilo, the wet season from November through April. These weren't just weather patterns — they shaped the fishing calendar, the agricultural cycle, the timing of ceremonies, and the rhythm of daily life across the islands.
Today, those rhythms still echo through the islands in ways that reward the attentive traveler. Whale watching season. Coffee harvest. The arrival of winter swells on the North Shore. The Merrie Monarch Festival. The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival. The Hawaiʻi Food & Wine Festival. Each month brings something worth knowing about — and worth planning around.
